Physical Testing (minor update 12/26/13)
(NOTE: this document is for parents and players to review only. The document that the coaches receive is a great deal more detailed with name, contact information, grad year, position, etc….That is sent to them directly and we also update them with changes. We do not want to publish that information on the internet.)
IMPORTANT: please remember that December & portions of January are an NCAA “Dead” (no contact with recruits) and “Quiet” (may only contact recruits IF they are ON campus) recruiting period for most college programs, you will not receive a lot of contact from them at this time. These periods are from Dec 2nd (day after Showcase) to January 18th 2014. Coaches are formulating plans over these next few months. Don’t panic if you are not hearing from them, most programs are not allowed contact with you at this time. You should send them emails with your schedule.
One of the top recruiting combines in the country, the Southern Volleyball Showcase provides a vehicle for athletes playing 16′s and above in club to demonstrate their volleyball skills to some 100 college coaches. The NCAA threw us a curve ball this year, so the date of the 6th annual Southern Volleyball Showcase is slightly different than in previous years; it’ll be held on Sunday, December 1st at Suwanee Sports Academy.
When you mark it in your calendars you will be quick to discover that this is not an optimal date, as it is the Sunday immediately following Thanksgiving–not a great day to be on the road. However, waiting until the following weekend–which had been our intent–is not an option this year, as it would place the event in an NCAA Quiet Period, thus defeating the it’s purpose.
We have vetted this date with a number of college coaches, all of whom have urged us to go ahead. Same with the athletes; we get several calls a week from girls wanting to know when they can register so that they’re not locked out due to procrastination.
We had record numbers of girls apply in 2012 and unfortunately we were not able to accommodate those who waited until the last minute to register. Indeed, as of late October, this year’s event has registrants from Puerto Rico and 16 states–including 14 from California–and with the Showcase still over a month away, we are already in a wait list situation. But don’t despair; in previous years, dozens of wait-listed candidates were cleared to participate. If you desire to be wait-listed for this year’s Showcase, go to the following link and follow the prompts. The wait list will be cleared in the order that paid registrations are received. (Of course if you register and your name isn’t cleared, 100% of the registration fee will be refunded to you.) Here’s the link:
As in the past, there will be two waves — one from 9:00 a.m. until noon and the other from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.. After you have registered, you will receive an email asking your preference as to wave assignments, and we will endeavor to honor these preferences, but must do so on a first-come basis. If there is any doubt about which wave you are to attend, or if you need to state your preference, you may do so by emailing the event’s registrar at firstname.lastname@example.org.
A recruiting seminar will be included as well. There will be one presentation in the morning and another in the afternoon, enabling parents and players to attend together if they wish. In previous years we have been told that the seminar itself was worth the price of admission.
Space is limited to 400 athletes, and the Showcase has sold out every year since its inception, so we urge you not to procrastinate if you wish to participate. It is not unusual for us to have registrations for athletes from 20 states, including Canada, Puerto Rico, California, Washington and New York, reinforcing the notion that it’s not necessary to LIVE in the Southeast to attend the Showcase; rather, if you want to ATTEND COLLEGE in this region of the country, the Showcase may be your best, most efficient way to be noticed by coaches from your target geographic.
For us, the most rewarding aspect of the Showcase is that each year we receive a dozen or so “thank you” emails from participants who committed to a program to which they were first exposed at our event. We’ve included a few of their comments in the “testimonials” tab.
Though we typically don’t know in advance which colleges will be represented, a listing of college coaches who have attended in the past is posted on the “colleges represented” tab. If a recruit attending the Showcase wants to be seen by a particular college coach, the best thing they can do to make that happen is to contact that coach, let them know they will be at the Showcase, and ask them to come watch.
If you are in need of housing please contact Kurt Matthews at email@example.com and we will send you our housing contact links to register on line. Our contracts with various hotels for all our events allows us to get you the best rates possible. I would highly encourage you to email me with your housing needs. We’ll take care of you!
The cost is $75.
The Showcase will grant written refund requests through Friday, November 15, 2013. Such refunds will be issued via a credit back to the credit card, less a $20 processing fee. Beginning November 16, 2013, the Showcase will issue refunds only when the registered player has a medical issue that prohibits participation in the Showcase event. Southern Volleyball Showcase, at its sole discretion, may request medical documentation before processing a medical refund request. In all instances refunds will be issued only if we are able to fill the athlete’s slot. Requests must be made prior the Showcase date (December 1, 2013). Wait-registrants who aren’t able to get in will have their registration fee refunded in its entirety.
